.....JR
Wells fielded the opening kickoff at the 12 and returned it 35 yards out
to the 47 yard line. The Saints opened the game with their trademark play,
a halfback pass from Malachi DeWalt to QB Marvin Bronson. The ball was
perfectly thrown down the left sideline for a 28 yard gain and only safety
Brandon Haw prevented Bronson from scoring. The drive stalled with safety
Brad Hippenstiel stopping DeWalt for a 5 yard gain on 3rd and 12. Larry
Moody came on to attempt a 45 yard field goal but it came up short.
.....The
Marauder offense took over at their own 35 and QB James Battle Jr. dropped
back on first down. Saint LB Larry Logan came hard on a blitzing forcing
Battle to throw blindly down the right sideline. The only player close
was Saint DB Justin Kelly, who intercepted the ball about the 40 and returned
it deep into Marauder territory. Battle saved the touchdown and
also forced Kelly to fumble. Despite several Marauders having a clear
opportunity, Kelly somehow came out of the pile with the ball. A penalty
negated much of the return and the Saints took over at the Marauder 34.
.....Bronson swept around left end for 11
yards on first down. On the next play DT Roguell Blue knifed in and disrupted
the timing of a Saints crossbuck, forcing the backs to collide with Bronson
and knocking the ball loose. LB Mike Balogun recovered for the Marauders
at their 23.
On first down DE Jackie Triplett and DT Bryan Flowers forced Battle to
throw the ball away to avoid the sack. RB Alpha Lee went off right tackle
only to be met by Eddie and Gabe Llamas for no gain. Bronson (6'2")
had great position on Battle's 3rd down fade intended for Jerome McGee
Jr. (5'7") but the pass went off his outstretched hands. The Saints
mishandled the ensuing punt but the play was nullified. The Marauders
punted again from their 10 and this time Bronson fair caught the ball
at the 32.
.....LB
Sean Chisley pressured Bronson on 3 consecutive pass plays. Haw knocked
away one pass, but Saint receivers flat out dropped potential 27 and 22
yard gains on 3rd and 4th down.
The Marauders took possession at their own 32 and despite an 8
yard gain by Lee on first & 15, back to back incompletions killed
the drive with Triplett pressuring Battle on 3rd & 12. A 43 yard punt
out of bounds by Dred Dodge finally pushed the ball onto the Saints half
of the field.
