Even though most teams were not at full strength, seeing
all ten on the field
simultaneously at the beginning of the tournament was a very impressive
sight!
From left to right: Bellingham Eagles (not in top picture),
Snohomish County Vikings,
Eastside Chiefs, King County Jaguars, Seattle Blue Devils, Puget Sound
Jets,
Pierce County Bengals, Washington Cavaliers, Oregon Thunderbolts, Oregon
Panthers
(TBolts and Panthers are not in the bottom picture).
|
| |
| |
| Game
1: Jaguars 7 - Vikings 0 |
| |

QB Tom Nakane and WR Neal O'Neal connected 25 times
for 500 yards last season, but did not have the same success against
the Jaguars. |
.. |
|
| |
| Game
2: Cavaliers 6 - Thunderbolts 3 |
| |
Jeff Wood put the TBolts up 3-0. |
| |
| |
| Game
3: Bengals 18 - Jets 6 (5 OT) |
| |

FB Moore Lee (29) banged in from the 5 to tie the game in the 2nd
OT. Not having a kicker, the Jets were forced to go for two and
could not convert. Meanwhile, the Bengals had repeated trouble with
the PAT snap in a game that a simple PAT would have won on several
occasions. |
|
| |
| |
| Game
4: Eagles 6 - Blue Devils 0 |
| |

Huge holes like this one for Carlos Gaston (5) allowed
the Eagles to run the ball all 10 plays on their scoring drive.
Gaston had 3 carries for 23 yards on the drive which ended with
QB Drew Jamison (17) taking the ball in from a yard out.
|
.. |

The Eagles' pass rush did not give Blue Devils QB Kedreen Woodley
a lot of time to pass. |
|
| |
| |
| Game
5: Panthers 9 - Chiefs 0 |
| |
| |
| Game
6: Cavaliers 6 - Jaguars 0 |
| |
| |
| Game
7: Vikings 13 - Jets 0 |
| |
|
| Game
8: Bengals 6 - Eagles 0 |
| |

After the Eagles first drive stalled, Bengals QB
John Brown tried to strike quickly with this first down fade pass.
Although incomplete, the Bengals did manage a quick score with back
to back runs of 23 and 21 yards by Malachi DeWalt, the latter being
the game winning score. |
|
| |
| |
| Game
9: Chiefs 7 - Blue Devils 6 |
| |
| |
| Game
10: Panthers 12 - Thunderbolts 7 |
| Not realizing that that a new team is not supposed
to be able to compete with the defending West Coast champions, the
fledgling Panthers scored on their first possession but could not
convert on the PAT.
The TBolts quickly answered and took the lead
with Jeff Wood's PAT.
The TBolts gambled with an all out blitz on the
last play of regulation and QB Todd Smith hit Kris Covert for
an easy long touchdown pass as the horn sounded.
|
|
| |
| |
| Game
11: Jaguars 7 - Eagles 6 |
| |

Filling in for injured QB Drew Jamison, Troy Stevenson
sweeps around left end. |
|
| |
| |
| Game
12: Vikings 7 - Chiefs 3 |
| |

Jason Skahan's short field goal gave the Chiefs an
early lead.
|
.. |

QB Tom Nakane scrambles for more time in the Vikings 7 - 3 win over
the Chiefs. |
|
| |
| |
| Game
13: Cavaliers 6 - Panthers 0 |
| |

Panther QB Todd Smith had a great afternoon completing
8 of 12 passes for 119 yards with 3 TDs and was not intercepted. |
.. |

Cavalier RB Ronnie Lee looks for the pass from QB Naamon Archer.
The pair later connected for the game winning touchdown pass |
|
| |
| |
| Game
14: Thunderbolts 13 - Blue Devils 0 |
| |
| |
Game
15: Pre-Season Tournament Championship
Bengals 8 - Cavaiers 0 |
| |

Although they didn't score, the Bengals ate up most
of the clock with their first drive. |
.. |

The Cavaliers almost won the game on their first
play from scrimmage but this Naamon Archer pass was just beyond
the reach of TE Derek Johnson. |
|
| |

In overtime receiver Chris Reynolds was able to adjust
to this underthrown fade pass and walk into the endzone untouched
as the Cavalier defender slipped. |
.. |

RB Malachi DeWalt pounds in the 2 point conversion to put the Bengals
up 8 - 0. |

1999
Preseason Tournament MVP
|
| |
| Since
there was always two games occuring at the same time, I was unable
to see everything. In addition, acting as Tournament Coordinator
and constantly being asked "Who do we play next?" really
hampered my efforts to take stats and pictures. Any vote for MVP
would be a guess at best...
That being
said, here is a short list of players that I think had a pretty
good day...
Kris Covert,
WR, #5 Panthers, Carlos Gaston, RB, #5 Eagles, Malachi DeWalt,
RB, #6 Bengals, Chris Reynolds, WR, #8 Bengals, John Sami, DE,
#80, Bengals, Rodrigo Garcia, #34, K/RB, Panthers
This is just
off the top of my head with no stats or game film to go by. I'm
sure I've missed a bunch of deserving players, and as usual, defensive
players and lineman are under represented.
My choice
for MVP...Malachi DeWalt, RB, #6 Bengals
