The King County Jaguars continued their winning ways against the Multnomah County Buccaneers in NWFL/NAFL action Saturday night in Kent. The Bucs had never defeated the Jags until last years 21-10 win on opening day. The Bucs looked to even the series at 2-2 but the opportunistic Jags were too much for their banged up squad. The Jaguars forced 6 Buccaneers turnovers and converted 3 of them into 21 points. Another turnover returned for a Jaguar touchdown was nullified by a holding penalty.
Andre Zahnjko's opening sailed over the Buc return men and bounced through the endzone setting the Bucs up at their own 20. The Bucs opened the game pounding the ball up the middle with RB #8 gaining 11 yards in 2 carries. On 2nd down from the 31, Buc QB Derek Johnson hit TE Shay Dean on a short pass across the middle. LB Elias Massey wrapped him up as LB Tommy Thompson, coming full speed from the far side, put a hit on him that popped the ball loose. CB Anthony Gayns scooped it up and went untouched 38 yards for the games first score. Rick Black converted the PAT.
The Buc offense got the ball back at their own 28 after another deep kickoff by Zahnjko was returned 27 yards by Josh Branch. Gayns and LB Dion Alexander stuffed RB #13 for a 3 yard loss on a sweep and then two incomplete passes brought up 4th down. The Jag offense finally hit the field after #80's 42 yard punt. Starting at the own 23, QB Leo Dickerson hit WR Carlos Clark out in the flat and Clark was off to the races but was ruled to have stepped out at the 36. RB Malachi DeWalt bulled for 10 yards and another first down on the next play. On 2nd down, Dickerson, who is possibly the hardest QB to sack in the league, eluded the outside rush from DE #68 but was chased down by DT Josh Redeau for a 4 yard loss. The Jags were forced to punt after an incomplete pass on 3rd down. The Bucs took over at their own 21 after Zahnjko's punt was downed.
The Bucs tried to go back to their inside running game but RB #8 was brutally decleated in the backfield by LB Robert Brown. The ball popped loose and was scooped up by DT Pete Johnson who rumbled towards the endzone before being pulled down by QB Derek Johnson at the 3. The Jags needed just two attempts to convert the turnover with RB Roberson taking it in from the 2. With 7:32 left in the first quarter, 3 Buccaneer possessions had resulted in 2 Jaguar touchdowns.
The Bucs next possession ended in another turnover, their 3rd in the first 9:41 of the game. This time Johnson scrambled to his left to avoid the pressure of DT Addison Perrin and threw back across his body to the center of the field towards Josh Branch. CB Cedric Mars was there for an uncontested interception before being immediately tackled by Branch.
Taking over at the Bucs 30, the Jags were on the move again with Malachi DeWalt's 12 yard run up the middle behind the downfield blocking of center Victor Tuli. On the 2nd play of the drive, Delano Edgecomb started out right and then reversed his direction and outran the Buc defense to the sideline. He made it all the way down to the 3 before being knocked out of bounds. A holding penalty nullified the play and the drive stalled from there. On 3rd and 23, Dickeron threw down the middle to TE Landon Bishop but Buc MLB Shay Dean was there for an easy interception. Dean returned the ball 22 yards out to the 40 before being brought down by Edgecomb. The Bucs went on a 6 play, 44 yard drive, but 43 of the yards and both first downs came on Jaguar penalties. The drive ended when TE Shay Dean made a spectacular catch of Johnson's 4th down fade pass but landed out of bounds.
Taking over at their own 17, the Jags responded with their first drive of the game. DeWalt swept left for 22 yards on 2nd on 16. Dickerson hit WR Hakeem McAllister for 12 more yards and another first down, and then DeWalt exploded into Buc territory for 16 more yards. Solid pass defense slowed the Jags temporarily but then on 3rd on 10 Dickerson went over the top to WR Kenneth Jackson for a 37 yard score. Black's PAT put the Jags up 21-0.
#8's 26 yard kickoff return set the Bucs up at their own 32. Three minutes into the 2nd quarter the Buc offense finally earned their 2nd first down with Johnson's 11 yard pass to TE Shay Dean. They seemed to be on track when Johnson hit Dean again on the next play for 14 yards. The Jag defense stiffened and the drive stalled when Josh Branch was stopped just shy of the first down by Jaguar safety Milton Myers on 4th and 2 from the Jags 40. The Jags tried to capitalize immediately with Dickerson going over the top to Hakeem McAllister but the ball was overthrown and Buc CB Maurice France was there for the interception, his 9th of the year. McAllister pulled him out of bounds at the Buc 22.
Buc QB Derek Johnson was under heavy pressure all day. On first down he was able to elude LB Robert Brown long enough to hit Mark Barlow for 10 yards. RB #8 swept left for 11 yards before being tripped up by one of his teammates blocking downfield. The Jag defense again stepped up. Brown blitzed up the middle untouched to sack Johnson on 2nd down. Johnson stood tall under heavy pressure on 3rd down and launched a deep pass just before getting blindsided by DE Jackie Tripoli. Jag safety Milton Myers intercepted the pass at the Jaguar 40 and returned it untouched for another score. Rick Black's PAT put the Jags up 28-0. Another decent return by #8 set up the Bucs at their own 33. In a near instant replay of the Bucs previous play, Tripoli again ran around the Buc OT, but this time he arrived before Johnson could get rid of the ball. The Buc offense could recover and ended up going 3and out. Buc punter #80 boomed an 46 yarder than pushed Myers back to his 25 yard line. He took off up the Buc sideline into Buccaneer territory before being caught from behind at the 33 yard line. With the help of a 13 yard penalty on the Bucs, the Jags moved the ball down as close as the 8 yard line. Rick Black's 35 yard field goal attempt just missed to the right as time expired in the first half. |

Halftime apparently didn't have any effect on the Jags momentum as Hakeem McAllister fielded the opening kickoff at the 12 and zig-zagged his way through the heart of the Buccaneer coverage to midfield before turning on the burners and outrunning them the final 50 yards. The Bucs took over at their own 28. Johnson hit Dean for 15 yards and a Jaguar penalty two plays later gave the Bucs another first down. Addison Perrin powered through the Buc line to sack the Johnson for a 9 yard loss. An offensive holding call on a receiver pushed the Bucs back 5 more yards setting up 3rd and 24. The Bucs tried to set up a screen pass but DT Khaleeq Abdul-Aziz deflected the pass right to LB Robert Brown who returned it 30 yards for an apparent score. A holding penalty negated the return but the interception stood and the Jags took over at the Bucs 38. |

The Jags took over at the Buc 38 but a penalty and a sack by MLB Shay Dean pushed them back to the 48 where they had to punt. Josh Branch fielded the punt at the 10 and was immediately hit by the Jag gunner. He somehow side stepped his tackle attempt and the slipped thru the grasp of another Jag and then headed up the left sideline and outraced the coverage to finally put the Bucs on the board with 9:24 remaining in the 3rd quarter.
The Jags answered with a 10 minute, 17 play, 88 yard drive. The Jags rushed 16 times for 107 yards on the trek. Kevin Roberson culminated the drive on a sweep for the final 20 yards. PAT holder Landon Bishop mishandled the snap so he picked up the ball and ran uncontested around the left end.
The Jag defense kept the pressure on forcing another Buc 3 and out possession with Nick Caldwell's 7 yard sack of Johnson on 2nd down being the big play. The Jags took over at their own 44 and proceeded on another ground assault. On the 4th play of the drive Delano Edgecomb swept right and saw that the Buc defense had overpursued. He cut sharply back towards the middle of the field and raced untouched to the left pylon. Buc DT Josh Redeau bulled thru the line to block the PAT and the final score stood at 48-7. The Bucs tried to mount one last drive with their backup QB but Milton Myers intercepted a pass on the 3rd play of the possession as time expired. |
